In
the making off the painting "Baron" (80cm
x110cm), I will show you the progress of how the
painting was created. I have taken pictures on a
regular basis while I was painting. The painting
has been made in around 12 hours over a period of
2 weeks (you will notice that the pictures are taken
at some different moments in time).
Enjoy!

Step
1
The rough idea was to paint a male body
using much yellow and red as base colors
- the painting should be furious and much
"alive" without a clear identification/representation
of the body.
I sketched the "contours" of a
male figure with thinned oil paint.
Some basic rough colors were applied to
the body and some guiding lines for the
background were set.

Step
2
The male body was build up slightly by adding
new colors
The background is filled up with dark colors
to emphasize the body.
When I start to paint, I normally don't
have any fixed idea on the direction my
painting is going nor do I have any idea
about the final "look" I want
to achieve.
When painting, it is all a question of the
mind and the way one feels at that particular
moment in time.

Step
3
I have spend some time on the male body
... I worked out the body parts in greater
detail (without putting too much detail
of course - this is not going to be a study
about the male body ;-) ).
I paid a lot of attention to the head giving
it more structure and colors

Step
4
I added new brighter colors and continued
adding extra layers on the body and the
background.
I continually changed my mind about how
the background was supposed to look like
...

Step
5
A lot of work has been done on the male
figure, emphasizing more and more the different
parts ... I also remodeled the "arms"
and painted some "hands".
The background has been reworked a lot by
adding new colors and by integrating it
more with the whole concept of the painting.

Step
6
I finally reached a level where I am more
or less satisfied with the look of the painting
...
I added some horizontal and vertical lines
to create some symmetric feeling in the
chaos of colors
Once again the body was reordered and brighter
colors were added.

Step
7
I had the feeling that the background of
the painting was not exactly what I intended
so I reapplied some darker colors to those
area's that where too bright.
I also applied some watered down black acrylic
paint in order to achieve the black "rain
drops" ... it's quite a funny feeling
to add water paint to an oil painting but
it does have its nice effects ....
Although not visible on the picture, some
light blue paint has been added to emphasize
some parts of the male figure.

Step
8
The final painting, photographed in day
light, to give you the best possible impression
on the colors being used.
The final image is not what I had in mind
when I started to paint, but that is just
the beauty of painting ... you know where
you start, but you never know where you
end ...
I am very satisfied with the final result
and I like the painting very much ...
